supwriter ai humanizer review - ProofreaderPro Blog

SupWriter is a web-based AI humanizer with a free AI detector, paraphraser and grammar checker built into the same workspace. It's aimed mainly at students and people writing in English as a second language, and one subscription unlocks all four tools together.

The detail that matters most in a SupWriter AI humanizer review is that the word limits and the price are one question. Every plan caps how much text you can paste in a single request, and caps how much you get across a month. The gap between the cheapest and priciest plan is large. Once you compare those numbers side by side, picking a plan is simple.

What is SupWriter?

SupWriter is built and run by a single founder. It says it's used by more than 9,000 writers, most of them students or people who write in English as a second language. The site describes itself as a workspace for humanizing, detecting, paraphrasing and grammar-checking text. Outside the website, the same engine is available through a Chrome extension, an iOS app, an API, an MCP server and a command-line tool.

The core idea is simple. Paste a draft that started with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another model, then choose a tone, a content type and a language. SupWriter rewrites it so the sentences sound more natural while keeping your meaning. You can then run the result through the built-in detector before you submit it anywhere.

SupWriter is unusually upfront about what its own detector can and can't tell you. Its about page describes the detector as a pre-check based on one scoring model. It also says no tool can guarantee how any outside detector will score a piece of writing, and that results vary by language.

Language matters for every detector. A detector trained mostly on native English patterns can flag a non-native writer's own sentences, because the phrasing looks less familiar to the model. Our breakdown of false positives in AI detection explains why it happens and what to do next. Our appeal letter template gives you a starting draft for pushing back on a wrong result.

How SupWriter's humanizer works

The humanizer is on one page, with a text box, a word counter and a row of menus above it. You can paste text directly or upload a PDF, and the box tracks your word count as you type.

Style, Type and Lang menus

There are three menus above the input box: Style, Type and Lang. Style sets the tone of the rewrite, Type tells the engine what kind of document you're pasting, and Lang picks the output language from more than 50 options. On the free and Basic plans you get 7 writing tones and 7 content types. Pro and Ultra raise that to 15 tones and 16 content types, plus a custom option for both.

The content types on Pro and Ultra cover essay, article, blog post, email, letter, cover letter, marketing copy, ad copy, social media, research paper and documentation, among others. Matching the type to what you're pasting changes the tone of the rewrite. A cover letter needs a different rhythm than a blog post, and the Type menu is how you tell SupWriter which one you're working on.

Writing DNA and the fine-tuning sliders

Pro and Ultra add a feature called Writing DNA, which SupWriter describes as matching the rewrite to your personal voice, along with fine-tuning sliders for creativity, length and vocabulary. Basic skips these and uses what SupWriter calls its basic humanization engine instead. The interface also has a Beast Mode toggle next to the tone presets.

Fix Selection and inline editing

Inside the Advanced Editor, available on every paid plan, you can highlight any sentence and ask SupWriter to improve it, fix the grammar or shorten it without leaving the page. This is separate from a full humanize pass. It's closer to a quick, targeted edit you'd make by hand, except SupWriter suggests the rewording for you.

The AI detector, paraphraser and grammar checker that come with it

A SupWriter plan isn't only a humanizer. The same subscription includes an AI detector, a five-mode paraphraser and a three-mode grammar checker, and all three show up as tabs in the Advanced Editor next to the humanizer.

One AI score, several detector labels

SupWriter's detector runs your text through one scoring model and then maps that single score onto labels for Turnitin, GPTZero, Copyleaks, ZeroGPT and QuillBot, among others. SupWriter's about page explains that all twelve labels come from that one internal score. If you want a closer look at how one detector scores text, our piece on whether ZeroGPT is accurate covers what its number measures. For how a one-score pre-check compares with the real thing, see our wider look at AI detector accuracy in 2026.

Five paraphrase modes

The paraphraser has five modes: Standard, Formal, Casual, Academic and Creative. It works on a sentence or a short passage, and it's meant for rewording a line that already sounds fine but needs a different register. Our own free paraphrasing tool does the same single-sentence job without needing a SupWriter account.

Three grammar modes

Grammar checking runs in three modes: Basic for a straightforward spell and grammar pass, Thorough for a deeper pass, and Style for a full readability rewrite. All three modes are in the same workspace as the humanizer. If grammar accuracy matters more to you than rewording, our own grammar checker is free to use on its own.

SupWriter pricing

SupWriter's plans on 2 October 2026 are Free, Basic, Pro and Ultra. Three differences matter most: the per-request limit, the monthly allowance, and whether the API is included at all.

Free trial

New accounts get 300 free words with no card required, usable once rather than refreshed every month. That's enough to test the humanizer and the detector on a paragraph or two before you decide whether to pay.

Basic, Pro and Ultra

PlanMonthlyBilled annuallyMonthly wordsWords per request
BasicUS$9.99/moUS$4.99/mo (US$59.88/yr)5,000500
ProUS$19.99/moUS$9.99/mo (US$119.88/yr)15,0002,000
UltraUS$39.99/mo (30,000 words/mo)US$19.99/mo (360,000 words/yr, US$239.88/yr)30,000 or 360,000 upfront5,000

Basic includes MCP access and SupWriter's basic humanization engine. Pro and Ultra use the advanced engine and add the developer REST API, Writing DNA, the fine-tuning sliders and Fast mode, and Ultra adds priority support on top. Extra credits beyond the monthly allowance are available on Pro and Ultra.

Ultra's annual plan is worth a second look, because it doesn't reset monthly like the other two. Paying yearly gives you the full 360,000 words upfront in one allocation, instead of in monthly chunks. That works out to the same 30,000 words a month you'd get paying month to month.

A 6,000-word chapter on each plan

A 6,000-word thesis chapter needs 12 passes on Basic's 500-word limit, 3 passes on Pro's 2,000-word limit, or 2 passes on Ultra's 5,000-word limit. At that length, Basic's 5,000-word monthly allowance covers less than one chapter, while Pro's 15,000 words covers two and a bit.

For most students writing in English as a second language, Pro on annual billing is the sensible middle. US$9.99 a month gives you 2,000-word requests, Writing DNA and the full set of tones, which matter more for a long assignment than the extra allowance on Ultra. Basic suits someone who only polishes a few short pieces a month.

Keep Your Citations Through the Rewrite

ProofreaderPro.ai's academic humanizer is designed to lower AI scores while APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE and Turabian citations stay in format, from US$19 a month.

Beyond the website: Chrome, iOS, API, MCP and CLI

SupWriter isn't only a website. A Chrome extension adds the humanizer, paraphraser, grammar checker and detector to other pages you're writing on, and there's an iOS app too. Developers get three more ways to call the same engine: a REST API, an MCP connector for assistants like Claude and ChatGPT, and a command-line tool.

The REST API starts on Pro, which matters if you're building the humanizer into your own workflow. Basic's MCP access lets you connect an assistant to SupWriter, and calling it from your own code needs Pro or Ultra.

SupWriter AI Humanizer vs. ProofreaderPro Humanizer

SupWriter bundles a humanizer with a detector, a paraphraser and a grammar checker for students and everyday writers. ProofreaderPro.ai is built specifically for academic writing, with a humanizer that keeps citations in format.

PriceUS$19 or US$29 a month (US$169 or US$259 a year)US$9.99 to US$39.99 a month, or US$4.99 to US$19.99 a month billed annually

Both tools bundle more than one feature into a subscription, but they bundle different things. SupWriter's extra value is the detector, paraphraser and grammar checker that come with the humanizer. ProofreaderPro.ai's extra value is that the humanizer itself understands academic structure. A citation like (Smith, 2024) stays exactly as written, so it still matches your reference list. Our APA citation guide covers the details that need to survive any rewrite.

SupWriter AI Humanizer Alternatives

SupWriter's closest alternatives are other budget tools that bundle a humanizer with adjacent writing features, since that combination is the main reason people choose it over a single-purpose humanizer.

SupWriter and QuillBot

Both tools rewrite text and both have a paraphraser built in, but they lead with different things. QuillBot leads with paraphrasing and grammar, with humanizing as one feature among several. SupWriter leads with the humanizer and adds paraphrasing and grammar checking around it. If you mostly need to reword individual sentences, QuillBot's paraphraser is the more mature tool of the two.

SupWriter and Grammarly

Grammarly is primarily a grammar and clarity checker that more recently added AI-detection and rewriting features. SupWriter was built the other way round, as a humanizer with grammar checking added in three modes. If grammar accuracy across long documents is your main need, Grammarly's checker has had far longer to mature than SupWriter's three-mode version.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is SupWriter free?

SupWriter gives new accounts 300 free words with no card required, used once rather than refreshed monthly. After that, the humanizer needs a Basic, Pro or Ultra subscription starting at US$9.99 a month, or US$4.99 a month billed annually.

Q: Is SupWriter legit?

Yes. SupWriter is a real, founder-run service with published Terms of Service and a Privacy Policy. It has a support address at support@supwriter.com, and an about page that names who runs it and what the product does and doesn't do.

Q: Does SupWriter have a word limit per request?

Yes, and it scales with your plan. Basic allows 500 words per request, Pro allows 2,000, and Ultra allows 5,000, so a long document needs more passes on a cheaper plan.

Q: Does SupWriter's AI detector use real Turnitin or GPTZero checks?

No. SupWriter's own about page says its detector gives one score and maps that score onto labels for Turnitin, GPTZero, Copyleaks and others. SupWriter itself describes it as a quick pre-check.

Q: Does SupWriter work well in languages other than English?

Results vary by language. SupWriter's own about page says its tests found some languages rewrite better than others, so test a short passage in your language before you rely on it.

Q: Does SupWriter have an API?

Yes, but only on Pro and Ultra. Basic includes MCP access for connecting an assistant like Claude or ChatGPT, but not the developer REST API that Pro and Ultra add.

Q: Can I see my previous humanizations on SupWriter?

Yes. Every plan, including Basic, includes a history you can open from your account to find and reuse earlier rewrites.

Q: Does SupWriter offer yearly plans?

Yes, and annual billing roughly halves the effective monthly price on every plan. Ultra's annual plan also changes how the allowance works, giving you the full year's words upfront instead of a fresh batch every month.

Q: What is SupWriter's Writing DNA?

Writing DNA is SupWriter's name for matching rewrites to your personal voice. It comes with the Pro and Ultra plans, together with sliders for creativity, length and vocabulary.

Q: Does SupWriter have a Chrome extension?

Yes. SupWriter's Chrome extension adds the humanizer, paraphraser, grammar checker and detector to other pages you write on, and there's also an iOS app.

Q: How do I cancel SupWriter?

Cancel from your account's billing settings at any time. SupWriter's Terms of Service say purchases are non-refundable and access continues until the end of the paid period.

Q: Is SupWriter good for academic writing?

It depends on what you need from it. SupWriter's rewrite is general-purpose. For a thesis or journal paper, a humanizer built to keep APA, MLA or Chicago references intact will save you cleanup afterward.
