Turn conversational drafts into formal academic register without the inflation. Paste up to 500 words: contractions expand, colloquialisms and casual phrasal verbs get their standard formal equivalents, vague intensifiers go, and every change is listed with its reason. Plain correct words stay plain, because use never needs to become utilize.

Up to 500 words: the conversational essay passage, the email to a committee, the abstract drafted from speaker notes. Write it the way you think it, then convert.
Contractions, colloquialisms, casual phrasal verbs, vague intensifiers and chatty asides are replaced with standard formal equivalents. Your argument, order and claims stay put.
Every change is listed with before, after and the register rule behind it, so you keep control of your voice and learn which habits keep costing you formality.
Formal means precise and restrained: informal wording gets its standard equivalent, and plain words that are already standard usage stay as they are.
Use stays use. Show stays show. The most common failure of tone tools, thesaurus inflation, is explicitly banned here.
Contraction expanded, colloquialism to formal verb, intensifier removed: each change names its rule, so the pattern becomes learnable.
Hedges and qualifiers survive conversion untouched. Sounding formal never means sounding more certain than your evidence.
Every writer has heard prose dismissed as too casual, and most respond the same way: reach for bigger words. It is exactly backwards. What reads as casual in an essay or manuscript is rarely the vocabulary; it is the machinery of speech carried onto the page: contractions, filler intensifiers (really, pretty, kind of), phrasal verbs (figure out, deal with, come up with) and asides addressed to the reader. Remove those and the register rises immediately, even though the words that remain are short ones.
Inflation, meanwhile, is its own register problem. Utilize for use, commence for start, in the event of for if: these do not make prose academic, they make it slower, and experienced readers see straight through them. The most cited style advice in the academic writing literature says the same thing from every direction: prefer the plain word when the plain word is exact. A tone converter therefore needs two lists, not one: the informal constructions to replace, and the plain words it must never touch. This tool was built around both.
Tone rarely travels alone. The formality checker scores where your draft sits before you convert anything, the first to third person converter handles the person axis when your venue requires it, and the sentence shortener removes the wordiness that formal drafts accumulate, including any inflation a previous editor let in.
For a full document, the ProofreaderPro editor keeps register consistent across the whole manuscript with tracked changes, which is how you stop a paper from sounding formal in the introduction and conversational by the discussion.
A conversational results paragraph converted to academic register, in tracked changes:
The results were pretty surprising, to be honest. We figured the older participants would struggle a lot with the app, but they didn't. Basically, once they got the hang of the interface, they were just as quick as the younger group.

"Surprising", "struggle" and "quick" stay because they are already register-neutral: the plain exact word is standard academic usage, and swapping it for a longer synonym would add length without adding formality.
